Burrows honoured with partnership award LEAS executive director Mae Burrows has been honoured by the Canadian Cancer Society with a partnership award, presented at a ceremony in Victoria April 3.
Joining her in receiving the award was Warren Bell, executive director of Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, who worked with LEAS and the Canadian Cancer Society’s prevention staff in presenting a series of pesticide forums around the province to support pesticide bylaws. The three organizations have also campaigned for right to know hazard labelling for consumer products.
Burrows was nominated for the award by CCS public issues manager Kathryn Seely who described her as “a tireless advocate, who has done much to improve the knowledge of British Columbians and to help give them a voice so that they can seek to improve the health of their homes and communities.”
Burrows said she was “proud to receive the CCS Partnership award on behalf of the Labour Environmental Alliance, for the collective work that we have done on protecting children and others from exposures to toxic pesticides.
“Winning municipal by-laws, and eventually a provincial ban is not something any group can do alone. It takes the work of a strong partnership such as we have formed,” she said.
